Thank you for joining me on another Ink & Share Blog Hop. If you have hopped over from Ingrid Heijnen-Hermens' blog, I'm sure you've seen some wonderful projects already. If you have started at my blog, thank you! This month's theme is our favorite item(s) from the Occasions Catalog. Did you know you only have until May 31 to purchase your favorite(s) and some have already sold out!
I have so many favorites in the Occasions Catalog but I decided to go with one I haven't had an opportunity feature that often - the Bird Banter stamp set. I think the adorable little bird characters are so fun and the sentiments are quite clever as well.
I'm using the toucan from the stamp set and I thought the "Just a little toucan of my appreciation" was so cute. Filling the box with something special makes it even more appropriate. I've also used a little piece of paper for the box lid from the Petal Passion Designer Series Paper. All of the black and white designs in the pack are striking and when you add a bit of color, it makes them pop even more.
To create the background I used Smoky Slate Classic Ink and stamped off before stamping the birds in various positions onto the card front. The bird and balloon were stamped in Memento Tuxedo Black. I colored the black on the bird with a Basic Black Stampin' Write Marker but the rest of the bird and balloon were colored using Stampin' Blends. All were cut out with my Paper Snips. The Stampin' Blends will be back in May and just a little hint - some additional colors are coming in June. YEAH! The sentiment was heat embossed with White Stampin' Emboss Powder onto Basic Black cardstock and I dropped a silver Metallic Enamel Shape on the end for emphasis.
I've seen cards with a little box sitting in the middle for some time but I've never tried one. You can find lots of tutorials on YouTube if you search "box on a card'. In fact, they usually are inserted into a slot at the top center fold. I'd never made one and decided to try something different. My card is folded on the side and the box sits between the folds.
The box is 2" x 2" like the other cards but I cut a section out of the front and the back of the card. Start with an 5-1/2" x 11" piece of cardstock scored at 5-1/2". Mark 1" over from the right front side of the card, then measure and mark a 2" square. I used my Stampin' Trimmer to cut out the first square, then traced that shape onto the back flap of the card and cut it out so my piece looked like this.
Frankly, I think there may be a reason why I haven't seen a card made this way. Keeping it from falling over was a bit tricky but if you fill the box with something not too heavy, like a half dozen or so Hershey kisses, it stabilizes it a bit. Here's a version with the box opening at the scored flap on the top.
Now pop on over to Kirsten Aitchison's blog to see what she's featuring from the Occasions catalog.
Here are the products I used in my project. If you don't already have a Stampin' Up! demonstrator, I'd be happy to assist you with questions and purchases.
Feel free to contact me.
What a great project and design!

This set is at the top of my Occasions favorites too! I like the whimsy of the balloon tied to the toucan; it fits so well with this set!

I won Bird Banter in Prize Patrol last November, can't believe it's retiring already. I've never tried the box in/on a card before, so must give that a go! Karen x
